LUCC, the land use and land cover changes is currently the forefront and hotspot of the global change research. Especially, selecting typical regions with a small scale as a research object is an effective path to deeply recognize the land use spatial change and its driving mechanism. Owing to the increasing demand for energy and the extensive exploitation of coal resources, a series of problems, such as environment pollution, ecological destruction, etc., have emerged in coal mining area which typical regions with a small scale.Considered from theoretical significance and practical needs, based on the Landsat TM image of 1993, Landsat ETM images of 2000 and 2007, information of land use changes in Lu'an mining area are extracted by using ENVI4.3 to forecast its futural trend. Finally, the main driving force factors of the mining area are studied by quantitative and qualitative analysis. The main results are as follows: From 1993 to 2007, dramatic changes have taken place on land use in the mining area. The prediction of land use condition in future will in accordance with the development targets and land ecological reclamation. The increasing impacts of the driving force will be obvious which accelerates the land use change in mining area .
