West Dongting Lake, as the important wetland resource of China, is a very critical part of maintaining ecological balance and economic sustainable development. However, due to the change of natural environment, silting of sediment and influences from human activities, the wetland resource of West Dongting Lake is destroyed seriously that the land utilization structure has been adjusted massively. Of course, people have gained enormous economic benefit from land utilization development, yet, the pressure on ecological environment has been increased concurrently. As a consequence, flooding disasters occurred frequently. After Yangtze River valley suffered catastrophic flood in 2008, the Central Government carried out "restoring the lake from the land" project in West Dongting Lake area actively in accordance with planning for water resources development. This paper, with wetland of West Dongting Lake as study object, has analyzed the features of wetland resource in West Dongting Lake area before and after "restoring the lake from the land" project, discussed the driving mechanism of such features change by utilizing transfer matrix under the technology support of GIS and RS. In addition, this paper has analyzed the landscape pattern change before and after "restoring the lake from the land" project under the support of Fragstats technology. The major conclusions are as fellows:(1) To research the change of wetland landscape by utilizing satellite remote sensing technology could not only reflect the increase or decrease of wetland area perfectly and show the change of this area in macroscopic view, but also intuitively demonstrate the dynamic change of spatial distribution and reflect the spatial change rules. (2) Landscape index calculated via Fragstats could correctly mirror the features and change of landscape structure of West Dongting Lake area. Especially, Fragstats calculation has provided various types of landscape index, which is propitious for us to analyze the landscape patches and landscape patterns from many aspects comprehensively.(3) It is found via the study on West Dongting Lake landscape change that the water area of West Dongting Lake had been increasing continuously from 1996 to 2009. During 1996-2004, the natural wetland changed its original succession rules due to man-made interference; during 2004 to 2009, silting of sediment had brought serious influence on wetland change, yet, lake area maintained increasing due to the remarkable performance of "restoring the lake from the land" project, however, silt bottomland and constructed wetland deteriorated severely, which responded to prevailing social and economic policies.
