Mao'ershan Nature Reserve lies to the northeast of Guangxi Zhaung Autonomous Region. Because of its special situation, it has abundant creature resource. However, so far no systematic research on Acridoidea was done in the reserve, hi order to get a better understanding for the ingredients and dynamics of grasshopper community, and to provide useful idea for the integrated pest management and for the development of insect resource, we had researched and analyzed the biodiversity of grasshopper in Mao'ershan Nature Reserve from July to October 2000. The number of species and their individuals were sampled in different habitats, altitudes, and months. The species were listed, and Simpson index, Shannon-Wiener index, Pielou index and Whittaker index were used to analyze the grasshopper community. The results show that there are 31 species belonging to 5 families and 24 genera in this area. 17 species, 14 genera of Catantopidae, occupied 54.84% as many as total species. 4 species, 4 genera of Oedipodidae, occupied 12.90%. 5 species, 2 genera of Acridedae, occupied 16.13%. 3 species, 3 genera of Arcypteridae, occupied 9.68%. 2 species, 1 genera of Pyrgomorphidae, occupied 6.45%. Among them 2 species are unnamed, those are CaryanJa sp. and IsOngzhoitacris sp. ; 5 species are new recorded in guangxi, they are Caryanda vittata Li et Jin, Fnihstorferiola omei (Rehn et Rehn), Chorthippus hunanensis Yin et Wei, Phlaeoba sinensis I Bol, and Phlaeoba albonema Zheng. Oxya agavisa Tsa( 19.10%), Tonkinacris sinesis Chang(17.16%), Sinopodisma rostellocerca You{22.65%), and Phlaeoba antennale Br-W(15 97%)were superior in number. Compared with the total species in Guangxi, the number of species in Mao'ershan seems to be scarce. The primary cause, we think, are low temperature, high humidity and strong wind. However the real cause should be studied in depth.Fauna analysis show that 24 species accounting for 77.42% of total species are oriental, including 3 endemic species. The other 7 species which are 22.58% of total species are widely distributed . The fact that oriental species are superior in number reflects this area is characterized by oriental fauna. The diversity indices of grasshopper community in different habitats show that the habitat of grassland-bush has the highest diversity, followed by the habitat of bamboo forest, then by the habitat of broad leaf bush. The broad leaf forest has the lowest diversity , both for grasshopper community and for each family. For Catantopidae and Oedipodidae, the habitat of broad leaf bush has the highest diversity. However for the other 3 families, the habitat of grassland-bush has the highest diversity. The diversity of grasshopper community reduce with the rise of altitudes. We found no grasshopper above 1600m. The shannon-Wiener and Pielou indices show that the diversity of each family reduce with the rise of altitude, and this trend is evident according to Pyrgomorphidae and Acridedae. For Oedipodidae and Arcypteridae, both shannon-Wienerand Pielou indices are highest in low altitude, second in high altitude, and lowest in middle altitude. For Catantopidae, the shannon-Wiener ndices fall with the rise of altitude, the Pielou indices, on the contrary, go up with the rise of altitude.Grasshopper are rich in both species and individuals in August and September. The diversity indices of Grasshopper community show that the diversity is lowest in July, second in October, then in August, highest in September. The species of Pyrgomorphidae were found in early time, and its diversity is highest in July. The diversity of Catantopidae, Oedipodidae and Acndedae is lowest in July, highest in August, then decrease in September and October. The changes of diversity indices of Catantopidae is not as evident as that of Oedipodidae and Acridedae. The shannon-Wiener and Pielou indices of Arcypteridae is highest in September. The Whittaker indices show that the type of habitat play an important role in influencing the distribution and formation of grasshopper community and its fa...
