Geographic Information System (GIS) is technical system by means of computer. By certain format, GIS can input, deposit, search, display and analyze all kinds of spatial data in the real-life world and attribute data, which describe the attributes of spatial data. GIS may accomplish the combination of map and data using the spatial attributes of data.Transportation planning is composed of many processes by investigating traffic actuality. At first, intending population increase, social economic development and land use are forecasted in the future. On the conditions, traffic demand is forecasted. After that, the form of transportation network and project of transportation is established and estimated. Finally, implement suggestion, schedule arrangement and outlay budget are organized for select planning project. In transportation planning, many things should be dealt with, such as population, national economic data, various using ground and scope of urban planning, length, grade and traffic capacity of road, traffic flow and traffic subarea, and so on. GIS is one of effective tools, which can process spatial data and attribute data of traffic network.Based on theory and software of GIS, the thesis do some application research on the Application of Geographic Information System to transportation planning, which is pertinent to characteristic of transportation planning and combined with actual circumstance of traffic zone and road network in certain city. During the process of transportation planning and by theoretical base and software development system of GIS, basal database is founded, which consists of spatial database and attribute database in information system of transportation planning. The system provides corresponding tools for editing and modifying graph data and can flexibly do some operations such as adding, deleting and modifying and so on. After that, preceding forecast, traffic demand forecast, traffic assignment and estimate of planning project can be done. Finally, production of transportation planning can be output by visible expression, such as producing various thematic maps. Accordingly, transportation planning and GIS is combined to make information system of transportation planning. Information with spatial property is expressed in visible way. It provides a visual, clear and comprehensive expressive means of transportation planning information. It will make decision-making of transportation planning more scientific and reasonable.
