As an important water supply resource of Beijing, groundwater is getting polluted and its quality is becoming worse and worse, which brings a hidden trouble for living water of the denizen. It is all-important to investigate and evaluate the environmental quality of groundwater by the way of environmental geochemistry.Based on the investigation and G1S software of Arc View, an environmental geochemistry GIS of the shallow groundwater in city zone and close suburb of Beijing is developed. The system can do many jobs for the environmental data of groundwater such as collection, storage, management, analysis and calculation, which shows a powerful function in spatial search, analysis, display and programing. In the two years of 2000 and 2001. many organic and inorganic contaminants of the shallow groundwater in city zone and close suburb of Beijing were investigated on the spot, more than 100 samples were got. By spatial analysis, modeling calculation and spatial interpolation, maps of each contaminant distributions are made and divided into two parts, the beyond the standard and below the standard. With those maps, the total environmental quality of the groundwater is evaluated. By contrast with those of 1996,1999 and 2000, such a result is got that the total environmental quality of the groundwater in 1999 descends more than that of 1996 and descends farther in 2000. Then we make a short-term forecast that the total environmental quality of groundwater will continue to fall in the follow years. To use the technology of GIS in the study of environmental geochemistry, it can make us solve questions faster and more conveniently; As a result, it raises our work efficiency more greatly. It is expected that GIS can be used more widely and more deeply in the subject.
