The flow in a pipe with sudden expansion is numerically studied in this paper. The finite volume method is used to discrete the flow controling equations on staggered grid and the SIMPLE algorithm is adopted to solve the equations. An improved high-resolution composite scheme COPMD is proposed to discreting the convective term. The GMRES method is used to solve the large non-symmetric sparse algebraic equations. The difference between the results, using the FUD and COPMD schemes respectively for the two-dimensional case, are given. Finally, the three-dimensional pipe flow is simulated, and the computed results are qualitatively agreed with the experiments.
