This paper makes a comprehensive analysis and study of China's coral reef in a detailed and systematic way from the angle of ecosystem. Based on a large amount of observed data and related data, and in the high of the conditions of local marine environment, it presents the typical characteristics of coral reef ecosystem in an all-round way and suggests the principle and thinking of conserving the sustainable utilization of coral reef ecosystem. The results show that the coral reef ecosystem is very fragile but of high productivity. Through quantitative comparison of the salinity, temperature, wind, wave, current, tide, biogenesis elements, and rare elements of coral reef in the coral reef zone of the Nansha Islands in China with these in the open sea, it is found that the nutrients and primary productivity in the coral reef are several dozen or several hundred times higher than those in the open sea. It is indicated that, given sufficient sunlight, the coral reef eco-environment could provide very intense photosynthesis, thus pointing to the important reason why the coral reef zone is highly productive. Analysis of the geomorphological features of coral reef and computation with the mathematical model show that the raised zone of coral zone could serve to reduce wave energy and that about 80% wave energy could be lost when it passes through the zone. The shallower the sea is, the bigger the wave losses coefficient D is. Systematic analysis of the ecological process, energy flow and productivity in the coral reef shows that the coral reef ecosystem is a top-level community with extremely high biodiversity. Finally, the paper reviews the present conditions in such aspects as the distribution of coral reef in China, The destruction of biological community, coastal protection and management and scientific research, etc; and proposes measures for researching into the technologies for restoring and rebuilding the coral reef ecosystem.
