In this paper, optical transmission properties of two dimensional Photonic Crystal slabs are analyzed by planewave expansion method and scattering matrix method. The two methods are both used in comparison with FDTD method. Lossless and loss dielectric slabs are both studied. It is found in this paper that:(l)Guided resonance is of particular importance of optical transmission properties of two dimensional Photonic Crystal slabs. Light is localized only for particular frequencies when guided resonance occurs. Light can couple to the radiation modes outside the slab.(2)Optical transmission properties of two dimensional metal Photonic Crystal slabsare quite different from which of metal slabs because of the Plasmon in the metal.(3) We study phase effects for the guided resonances in photonic crystal slabs. In particular, in a mirror symmetric system, these guided resonances are either odd or even, and thus can be selectively excited by suitable symmetric or antisymmetric irradiation coming from both sides of the slab. We also study this phenomenon in the case of an asymmetric system irradiated from both sides, as well as the more realistic and interesting case of a system bounded from one side by a perfect mirror. The main finding is that phase effects persist in the asymmetric system...
