Electronic map is the product of computer mapping based on computer science and information technology. The emergence of electronic mapping has revolutionized the traditional ways of map design and production, replacing the static 2-dimensional representation using a dynamic multi-dimension and virtual visualization.Cartographic communication between map designer and readers has become more convenient and meaningful due to the powerful capabilities of electronic map. On the other hand, the classical essence of cartography has been ignored as more and more attention has been shifted to the new technologies adopted in the discipline of cartography. This paper discussed several basic principles of electronic mapping and particularly focuses on the techniques of cartographic visualization. In organization, the paper consists of three parts. In addition to "Introduction", chapter 2 provides an overview of cartographic theories. The progress of cartography from paper map to electronic map is introduced, and then the difference of them is discussed, and finally the approach of advancing visualization quality is analyzed from special cognition. The technological achievements of electronic map visualization are discussed in chapter 3. The reasonable usage of colors and design ofsymbols that improve visualization quality are discussed detailed from visual sense, and finally the technique of adjusting dynamically map loading is expatiated.Chapter 4 provides a real project that takes advantage of several practical techniques in cartographic visualization. These feasible techniques are introduced based on the basic theories and the technological achievements, and finalfy it is applied successfully in the real project.
