Parasympathetic preganglionic neurons (PPNS) originated mostly from dorsal motornucleus of the vagus (DMV) which played an important role in gut motility and sensory.Nucleus of solitary tract (NTS),which lied in dorsalateral region of DMV, was a gut sensorycentral. DMV, NTS and area postrema (AP) constituted the gut parasympathetic preganglioniccentral with sensory information afferent, integrated and efferent function. However, there isstill some discrepancy about the effect of DMV and NTS on gastric function. In this study, itis planed to discuss the action of the two nucleuses from the point of efferent and afferentpathway. The article was composed of two parts. The first part, DMV, NTS and nearby areas were electrically stimulated to monitor thechanges of gastric motility. To do this, two groups of experiments were performed. Firstly, electrical stimulation was administered in DMV and NTS. And then gastric motility curves, inwhich frequency, duration, amplitude, and index of motility were as indexes, were recordedwith intraluminal balloons and two-lead physiological recorder. Stimulation is square-wavepulses activates (30Hz, 0.15mA,0.3ms) and lasted 5mins. The second stimulation wasperformed after the interval of 15mins in order to relieve the effect of the first stimulation. The results showed that electrical stimulation of DMV and NTS led to significant inhibitoryon gastric motility. It was suggested that the activity of DMV inhibited smooth muscles andNTS also participated in modulation of gastric function in spite of a gut sensory nucleus.Secondly, after recording a segment of normal gastric motility curves, DMV and NTS werestimulated. About 15mins later, bilateral vagotomy was performed and gastric motility wasrecorded for 15 mins, and then the second experiment was carried out with the sameparameter. The results showed that gastric motility was inhibited significantly after vagotomy, especially embodying frequency and amplitude. It suggested that the two nucleuses affectedgastric motility through the vagal pathway. However, with the second stimulation of DMV...
