Oil is the important resource for social and economic development in every country. Marginal oil field exploitation is a system engineering including drilling operation, oil extraction, and platform construction. It plays an important role to propose ocean environmental conditions criteria for structural safety and investment reduction. Based on observed and hindcast data, a bivariate Pearson â…¢ distribution is adopted to calculate the joint probability of extreme wind velocity and wave height. Different statistical models are compared. Calculation results are given as decision-making references for departments of government, planning, and design. The main content of this study is as follows:1. According to the properties of Pearson Type â…¢ distribution, a simple and effective method is put forward to estimate the three unknown parameters instead of traditional curve-fitting method.2. To summarize two-dimensional non-normal joint distribution in use, such as Bivariate Weibull Distribution, Bivariate Log-normal Distribution, Bivariate Gumbel Distribution, and Bivariate Gamma Distribution. Because Pearson HI distribution is a recommended model in long-term statistical analysis, this paper emphasizes on the feasibility to determine design criteria of wind velocity and wave height with Bivariate Pearson Type â…¢ Distribution.3. In order to propose design parameters of wind velocity and wave height, both Bivariate Gumbel Distribution and Bivariate Pearson Type â…¢ Distribution are selected to complete statistical analysis in the basis of 29-year observed data sampled at Weizhoudao Hydrologic Station.4. Bivariate Pearson â…¢ Distribution is used to estimate the return values of wind velocity and wave height hindcasted in offshore area of southern Bohai Sea. Different criteria of design parameters are compared for marginal oil field exploitation.
