Starting with a review on the development of the fracture mechanics and piezoelectric material, the theory of piezoelectric ceramic and the application of the fracture mechanics on piezoelectric ceramic are stressed on. The research of several fracture criteria for piezoelectric ceramic and the development of finite element method in fracture mechanics of piezoelectric ceramic are briefly introduced. Several methods to calculate J-integral and energy release rate are discussed and implemented in ANSYS with APDL. On the basis of these, the piezoelectric ceramic panel with a center crack was modeled, and the strain energy release rate, total energy release rate and J-integral were computated and compared with analytic solutions to show correctness of the program and validity of the method. Subsequently, the compact tension test of piezoelectric ceramic was simulated by FEM. Meanwhile, we investigated the feasibility of strain energy release rate calculated by method of J-integral and method of energy release rate to predict the fracture. Also, the three-point bending test was numerically simulated in order to investigate that if the strain energy release rate and total energy release rate can predict the angle of the crack or not. At the same time, we compared the result calculated in this paper with the test result to draw a conclusion.
