With the rapid development of the urban construction in China, more attention has been paid to the production of digital city maps. So, it is very important how to place automatically and validly city street names on city maps in computer-assisted cartographic environment. In fact, automated name placement is a key engine to improve the efficiency of map production, furthermore, is a role factor to drive the development and application of GIS. This paper is here on purpose to improve the automation degree and labeling quality of the automatic city map labeling system, and to reduce the manual work, and to solve the practice difficulties, and to make the academic research apply broadly in industry. After referring many technical literatures and deeply analyzing development of this research presently at home and abroad, the author analyzes and investigates the existing theories, methods and rules on automatic map labeling. The paper presents the automated reasoning strategies and mathematical algorithms on the chief features of city map, for instance, point features, city streets, residential area, and so on. And, a novel approach is presented to automatically convert the labels of the annotation layer into the name attributes of the associated spatial objects because there are not the relations between annotations and objects in current cartographic database. Based on the character of the Arc/Info platform, the paper designs and implements a subsystem for the automatic name placement on city map. This system is developed with AML as programming language, city map database as the map data resources and Arc/Info as the background server for displaying data, analyzing data and storing data. At last, the subsystem was tested and applied in the program of the automatic name placement on Guangzhou city map.
