Automatic Generalization Of Building And Road Based On ArcGIS

The development of GIS imminently requests the appearance of the software with map generalization functions. However, developing a series of map generalization software with only a kind of programming language is in need of abundant manpower, material resources and money. It takes much time, there is a risk. Now we develop it on the basis of GIS software. Thus, we can save costs, shorten development time and reduce risk. Recently, ArcGIS software produced by company ESRI is in the dominant place among the all over the GIS software market. Although there are some generalization functions in ArcGIS, those commands are not systemized, and they are short of a complete generalization strategy.In this paper, an automatic generalization system of buildings and roads is designed and carried out, with AML programming language in Arclnfo workstation. In the two series of sub-systems, the human-machine interaction is used, and all aspects in cartographic generalization process are considered. The logic process of cartographic generalization is given. Finally, this system is used in topographic data generalization, and the experimental results are satisfied.
