The laser 3D scanning technology can measure objects with complex surface and give them accurate 3D models quickly and without touching. This technology, with its particular predominance, is broad applied in such numerous fields as CAD reverse engineering, Computer Vision, Pattern Recognition, 3D Cartoon and Virtual Reality. In the paper, the problem of registration of seriate multiple range images is addressed. Multiply range images of different viewpoint are registered to estimate the relative transformations for two partially overlapping range images.Firstly, the paper introduces the development of the laser 3D scanning technology, and simple introduce the process of getting 3D models using range images obtained from the laser scanning.Secondly, the paper mainly deals with this key step by analyzing its theory and introducing a lot of algorithms. Next the paper proposes an ICP-based registration algorithm for two partially overlapping range images. We consider all main components of ICP algorithm, such as initial transform parameters, control point selection, the nearest point search, 3D data rebuilt, the valid determination of correspondence and so on. And wo reconstruct the surface model.Lastly, Experiments demonstrate that the method can satisfy the requirements of computing cost and accuracy of object model reconstruction. Our registration method provides an easy way to fast automatic model recovery.
