Magneto-rheological fluid(MRF) is used as a new type of smart material. MRF consists of fine magnetic grains in a carrier fluid, such as silicone oil, they could exhibit a controllable shear yield stress under a magnetic, which looks like a process of solidification, and this process of change is reversible and consecutive. The fluid changes state from liquid to semi-solid in about 6 milliseconds, and it is controllable and easy to be applied with computer technology. Because of these features, MRF is being considered in variety of devices such as shock absorbers, vibration insulator, brakes or clutches.MRF clutch works on the shear force supplied by MRF. When the coils of the clutch are imposed currents of some intensity, it causes a fast and dramatic change in viscosity of the MRF contained in the clutch, it become polarized and gathered to form chain-like structure, the result is the clutch with an infinitely variable torque output. When the magnetic is removed, MRF would turns back into a state of a common Newton fluid. It is how the clutch be achieved by utilizing the shear stress of the MR fluids, and the torque can be adjusted continuously by changing the current during working. So we know MRF clutch has many advantages such as putting out a stable torque, simple structure, Easy to be controlled, long working life, etc.This paper carries out systematic theoretical and experimental research on preparation of MRF and some recent application of MRF at first, then we analyze the principle of MRF and compare different techniques of producing MRF, and make sure the constitutive equation of MRF. Then we compare with three different modes of torque transmission of MRTD (Magneto-rheological transmission devices) and choose the double-plates mode finally. After that we analyze the composition of torque output and build a mathematical calculation model for the MRF clutch, and then we make a detailed mechanical design for each main component, and give out an assembly plan at last. In the end, we make some optimization based on the analysis of the simulation results.
