Optical 3-D Sensing is an important field of Information Optics. It is widely used in machine vision, reverse engineering, on-line inspection, biomedicine and other applications. Along with development of computer technology, optics and opto-electronics, new methods of 3-D sensing are emerging. The most popular 3-D sensing methods are laser-scanner, phase measuring profilometry and Fourier transfer profilometry. Besides, we can also use the color of light to accomplish 3-D sensing. The relationship between color and height is established through color coding, the height of object can be calculated by decoding. This paper gives detailed description on color-coding methods. Experiments are carried on to prove this technology. The main contents of this paper are:1. The most commonly used color-coding methods are introduced. Also their advantages, disadvantages and applications are indicated.2. The color difference of neighboring stripe is maximized by using digital technology to restrain noise. We suggested an edge detection algorithm which is based on the distance of RGB color space. This algorithm takes advantage of color difference of different stripes and can find edge effectively.3. We introduce a way of taking chromatic image using monochrome CCD. This method can reduce cost and improve accuracy.4. Computer simulation and experiment of 3-D sensing using exclusive color sequence are done. The results proved that this method is feasible.5. Time coding technology is used for labeling stripes. We can use this technology to measure non-smooth object. This method is also...
