Red clay is the high plastic limit clay soil that is origin from the carbornate rock which underwent the laterization. It is regional special soil and distributed in the south of China. Its engineering property is very peculiar. Based on the theory of soil behavior, the peculiar character of engineering property of red clay is determined by the special component and structure of soil mass. Actual red clay is the result of the dynamic evolvement of ancient circumstance from the angle of geology and geography. All property of soil mass is produced from the soil forming and is evolved in soil proceeding.Guizhou province is the main red clay distributing region in China and is the typical Karst distributing region in world. This dissertation is begun from the characteristic of the consolidation and deformation of red clay. Combined with the phylogeny of Guizhou geology and geography and Guizhou regional geological characteristic, the reason that the characteristic of the consolidation and deformation of red clay is controlled by the process of soil forming and component and structure is researched by the numbers in this dissertation.It is found by soil test that red clay has several special consolidation and deformation property, that is: 1, red clay has high void ratio but has middling compressibility; 2, red clay is pre-consolidation but has high void ratio; 3, the pre-consolidation is mainly aroused by non-gravitation; 4, the degree of consolidation in the red clay profile is good in top and is feebleness in bottom. These special consolidation and deformation property are in opposition to the traditional soil mechanical theory. After advanced studying, it is recognised that the main mineral in red clay is sheet clay mineral which formed lots of clay mineral agglomerate. The interlink among clay minerals in agglomerate is very strong and is rigidity. It made a throng of void being inertia void. So red clay has the property of high void ratio. But the strong interlink in agglomerate and dissociated oxide cementation among agglomerates made red clay has high structure intensity, so red clay is pre-consolidation soil and has middling compressibility. Red clay came through Karst and laterization, and the special consolidation profile was formed in Karst and laterization.
