LIDAR(Light Detect and Ranging) is a kind of active geometric acquisition system, developed by the western countries at first and used widely as a new developing technology. It is integrated with laser ranging technology, computer technology, inertia measure unit(IMU) and DGPS technology. This technology obtain the real 3-D spatial information and make the great breakthrough. It is bring a brand-new technological means for obtain high space-time resolution information. LIDAR is high automatic, little affected by weather conditions, shortly production cycle and high precision. Laser pulse transmited by LIDAR can penetrate woods partly, enable the geometric acquisition of high precision terrain surface and has the superiority than tradition photogrammetry and routine ground measure. So it has caused the great interest of the circle of surveying and mapping. This technology has broad development prospect and application in topographic surveying, environment measuring, three-dimensional city, etc. May be bring new technical revolution for surveying. The development and application of LIDAR technology in western countries have already had a history of more than ten years, but research and application of this respect in China has just started. Extracting DEM and inventorying resources in forestry area is one of the focus of research efforts. Algorithm of filtering and segmentation, extracting some forest vegetation parameters, including DSM, average tree hight, tree canopy and forest timber abstraction is presented in this paper. The detail organization of the thesis is as follow. Firstly, A description about the characteristic of LIDAR, current situation of the development about domestic and international, field of application, is presented.
