Terahertz wave means the electromagnetic radiation from 100GHz to 10THz, which is also between microwaves and infrared waves on the electromagnetic spectrum. Due to its special wavelength and photon energy, terahertz wave is quite valuable in various research and application areas. Recent years, much attention was placed on terahertz science and technology especially on terahertz sources.Cherenkov radiation occurs when a charged particle traveling faster than the velocity of light in environmental material. With the development of terahertz science and technology, Cherenkov radiation was also employed in terahertz generation. In this paper, we will give a systematic and macroscopic analysis of the Cherenkov radiation in various medium, base on classical electromagnetic theory, and then analyze and discuss the availability of Cherenkov radiation in terahertz generation.The thesis is organized as follows:(1) Discussed the classical theory of the Cherenkov radiation, and analyzed the basic applications of terahertz generation using Cherenkov radiation. Give the relationship of dispersion relation, radiation structure and their availability in diverse materials. And analyzed two basic applications of terahertz Cherenkov radiation.(2) Analyzed the Cherenkov radiation in dispersive medium and established a simple and systematic method to analyze the radiation in various media, including dispersion or not. This method will be quite powerful in the analysis of complicated, periodic materials.(3) Give theoretical explanations of Cherenkov radiation in photonic crystals structures, analyze the relationship between the velocity and radiation modes, and then discuss the ability of photonic crystals in controlling the radiation frequency band which is the basis of terahertz Cherenkov radiation.(4) Finally, calculated the Cherenkov radiation in one kind of novel electromagnetic materials with negative permittivity and discuss the possibility of using these kinds of media in terahertz generation.
