The basic characters of our coastal marine environment are that water is turbid and physiognomy at the bottom of the ocean is complex. So it affects the working performance of the detection equipments underwater. But domestic scientists have less understood the properties of the absorption in turbid water. If the research on the properties of sound absorption in turbid water is launched, it will be helpful to establish accurate and efficient calculation model of sound field. It will also be helpful to investigate the character of turbid water, small target and torpedo at the bottom of ocean or buried by mud and sand. It will be helpful to design sound detection system. It will be helpful to enhance working properties of underwater acoustic equipments. In this paper, the coefficient of sound absorption in turbid water is measured by the reverberation technique. Theory and experiment compose of the text. In the part of theory, it mainly explains the principles of sound absorption, methods of measuring sound absorption and methods of measuring the coefficient of sound absorption in turbid water. In the part of experiment, all work has been done in a reverberation barrel. The barrel is the part of the system that measures sound absorption. Degassing and damping techniques are in the system. Firstly, the pure water is poured into the reverberation barrel in the experiment and its reverberation time is measured. Secondly, turbid water is poured into the barrel and its reverberation time is also measured. After the data has been handled, the coefficient of sound absorption in turbid water of different concentrations is listed. The paper summarizes the law of sound absorption in turbid water. At last, the paper summarizes the disadvantages and improvements of the system.
