The earthquake-induced disaster in our country is more serious than the one in most of the other countries in the world. The severe disaster induced by earthquake, most of which was caused by ground failure induced by earthquake, brings heavy losses of private possession and national economy, and causes casualty in large number. In the meanwhile, the GIS is being applied far-rangingly in the field of seismology prevention and disaster reduction, which is one kind of effective system of taking, storing, inquiring and processing the spatial data. But most of the application fields focus on construction and the lifeline system, and there is seldom study on the application of GIS on the earthquake-induced ground failure.The system of prediction of the earthquake-induced ground failure based on GIS has been studied primarily in this paper, which can realizes the function of space-time analysis and regionalization analysis of the ground failure. The study makes up the shortage of the field of the seismology prevention and disaster reduction based on GIS. The study in this paper mainly focuses on the following several aspects.1) Investigating the history of development and current situation of the GIS desktop; Summing up the fundamental composition,function and the key technology of the common used software of GIS; Summarizing the application of GIS on the fields of the seismology prevention and disaster reduction, and Geotechnical Engineering, especially Geotechnical Seismology Engineering.2) Collecting the research materials on the management system of engineering geological exploration based on GIS home and abroad; Summing up the overall design, the design of the functional modules, the key technology, the methods of second development and the developing direction.3) Summing up the major types of earthquake-induced ground failure, and the study situation of all kinds of models of ground failure; Filtrating the models, and studying the reliability of them and the operability of them on the GIS desktop. 4) Establishing the overall design scheme of the system of prediction of the earthquake-induced ground failure based on GIS; Designing the overall structure and the functional structure; Accomplishing the overall planning programming of the database; Constructing the sublibrary of the models of the space-time evaluation and the sublibrary of the models of regionalization evaluation.5) By giving a demonstration of a city, constructing the system of prediction of earthquake-induced ground failure in a city based on GIS; Realizing the functions of prediction of typical kinds of ground failure, the dangerous evaluation of regionalization, and the functions of integrated dangerous evaluation of regionalization.
