Investigation of nonlocal optical spatial solitons have absorbed in much interest dur-ing recent years both theoretically and experimentally. Study of nonlocal spatial solitonscan extend our knowledge of fundamental phenomena of physics. Furthermore, opticalsolitons have potential applications to signal processing and communications. In this thesis, we investigate the propagation of nonlocal optical spatial solitons innematic liquid crystals theoretically and compare the nonlocal model in nematic liquidcrystals with model suggested by Snyder. On the basis of SchrSdinger-type nonlinearequations, we not only obtain the analytical expression of spatial soliton but also get theexpression of breather in the vicinity of the critical power by use of Guassian trial solution.By comparisons of analytical solution and simulations, we find that our expressions aremore precise than those of C. Conti and G.Assanto.This thesis is divided into four chapters, it is arranged as follows:Chapter 1: The basic knowledge of the optical spatial solitons and nematic liquidcrystals are introduced.Chapter 2: Source of nonlinear refractive index and theory of propagation of solitonsin the nematic liquid crystals. Comparison the nonlocal model in nematic liquid crystalswith model suggested by Snyder.Chapter 3: Analytical solutions of single soliton and breather. Period formula andmaximum (minimum) width formula of breather. Comparisons of analytical solution andsimulations.Chapter 4: The prospect of research.
