The sea bottom scattering coefficient is very important in both military and civil field. In underwater acoustic field, how to get the sea bottom scattering coefficient has been a difficult and hot discussed topic for a longtime. This paper focus on the study of the in place measurement method for getting the bottom scattering coefficient.First of all, based on the definition of the bottom scattering coefficient, a new method for measuring the bottom scattering coefficient is presented in this paper. According to this method, the bottom scattering coefficients can be achieved when the incident grazing angle the incident azimuth angle the scattering grazing angle the scattering azimuth angle or the frequency of the sound is changed. The details of how to carry this method into execution is also discussed in this paper. The performance parameters of the equipments, such as the intensity level of the sound incident array the directivity of the sound incident array the sensitivity level of the hydrophone array the directivity of the hydrophone array and so on are presented in this paper too. Based on the relation between the output voltage of the hydrophone and the bottom scattering coefficient, the data collected during the experiment are analyzed and the bottom scattering coefficients are achieved. The result achieved from the measurement matches that from the 3-D scattering model quite well. Finally, the error analysis is presented.
