As a new technique, three-dimensional laser scanning technique has been developed in recent years, which is called another technology revolution after Global Position System. This technique owned effective method of obtaining space data, and has a more and more important effect on a number of fields due to its quickness, precision and measure without contact. Development of science and technology impels expansion of new methods into every field. Traditional methods of geologic investigations expend time and manpower to some degree, and even involve security of people working in the field. Sometimes the results of the investigations are unsatisfactory. It is theoretically and practically significant to apply three-dimensional laser scanning technique to the fields of geo-technique and geology engineering, as is an available supplement for traditional survey methods.(1)The paper firstly introduces internal and international research situations, and classifies the hardware equipments of the laser scanners in detail. Basic theories and error analysis of three-dimensional laser scanner are described, and the difference between the laser canning technique and the traditional measure methods is simply discussed.(2) The paper amply presents processing software-Polyworks 8.0 on the basis of many applications of ILRIS 3D laser scanner, which includes capture, disposal and interpretation of three-dimensional data.(3) The laser scanning technique is applied to geo-technique and geology engineering, and some problems happening in application of practical projects are analyzed, which include coordinate transformation, identification and interpretation of geological information, and research on calculated methods of geologic structure planes. (4) The paper discusses the methods that 3D scanning technique is applied to engineering, and their advantages. Their engineering applicability and some problems are summarized, and the effects of engineering application are analyzed. The results indicate that 3D laser scanning technique has more advantages than traditional measurement and investigation methods because of speediness, high performance, and high precision and high resolution of the scanner during obtaining space data. And therefore this technique will show a wide prospect of applying in the field.
