The coastal zone is important for ecology and economy. With the development of economy, the industrialization and urbanization not only change the land use / land cover in the costal zone but also affect environment and resource there. The traditional methods can't meet the requirement for costal zone monitoring due to the difficulty of accessing to the complex coastal terrain, sufficient information acquisition, data processing, etc.Remote Sensing techniques have the advantage of synoptic and frequent view of the large geographic areas, which is useful and convenient for the studies of land use/ land cover in the coastal zone. Using multi-temporal satellite images from Landsat/ ETM+ and Terra /ASTER, land use/ land cover in the coastal zone of Jiaozhou Bay are studied. The preprocessing for atmospheric correction, geometric correction, image fusion and water/land separation are carried out. The maximum likelihood classification is selected to the types of land use / land cover. The change analysis is done by post-classification comparison. The thesis is organized as following:1) The development and status of image fusion methods are investigated. An improved image fusion method based onàtrous wavelet decomposition is presented. Quantitative assessment of the results shows better preserve of image definition and less loss of spectral information of the fused image obtained by the method. The fused images with high spatial and spectral information increase the accuracy of classification.2) Using the land-sea separate mask derived from regional-grown method, the land field including aquaculture land, brine pan, tidal flat, are extracted, which assure the accurate classification.3) The land use/land cover map of the coastal zone around Jiaozhou Bay is obtained using multi-temporal remote sensing data by the maximum likelihood classification. The eight-type land uses / land covers are finally determined by a clump filter and class combination. The change of the land use /land cover in the coastal zone around Jiaozhou Bay from 2000 to 2004 is analyzed with post-classification comparison method. The results indicate that from 2000 to 2004 the area of Jiaozhou Bay in the studied zone has a little reduction, urban buildings are expanding northward gradually, and the old downtown area is relatively stable. The area of aquaculture ponds is decreased while the area of salt pans is increasing. Some of the aquaculture ponds are abandoned. The pollutant near the Alkali Factory is decreased.
