Since reform and opening up, with the vigorous development of national economy, the pace and scale of urban construction have been launching at an unprecedented speed, and geotechnical engineering investigation activities have also reached a considerable scale in breadth and depth because of a large number of construction projects. For a modern city, the stratum is the supporter of civil engineering and the foundation of urban planning and construction. The completeness and accuracy of underground information are vital important for entire project. Boreholes are primary means of getting stratum information, and have very high re-use value. Therefore it is very urgent and meaningful to build digital urban stratum.Visualization technology is a new branch of computer science which is emerged in 1980's. By use of computer graphics processing technology, it can express very complicated and even abstract concepts by visual images. The stratum is the geologic body which experiencing a long history of geological evolution. The characteristics of stratum are discontinuity, invisibility and irregularity and so on. Application of visualization technology can be used to show the spatial distribution and direction of stratum.This paper takes GIS as a foundation, Visual C++ 6.0 as a development tool, and applies object oriented programming languages to build and visualization analyze the 3D stratum model of Dalian urban by boreholes in OpenGL graphics platform. StratumGIS software system can flexibly edit the spatial information and attribute information of boreholes, simulate borehole locations in the plane and spatial drill column, automatically generate 3D model of stratum by boreholes, and draw some stratums according to requirement. The system can also arbitrarily cut the stratum model by the vertical plane. The function of virtual boreholes which combined geology experts experience can expand the limited borehole data. By applying the serialize technique, the system can save the serial number of vertexes of Delaunay triangles in the permanent document in sequence, which can be used to build 3D modeling later. This software system realizes the interactive management of borehole data, 3D modeling and visualization analysis. It also supplies 2D map production and 3D function display. The software system is a useful tool for geologists and engineers.
