In this paper,we present the method of rational expansion for finding exact solutions of the nonlinear partial differential equations,which is a formal generalization of the tanh-function method.As applications,using the rational expansions with the Tanh function,the exponential function and the rational polynomial function respectively,we get some new exact solutions for the KdV - mKdV equation,nonlinear dispersive-dissipative equation,the Chaffee -Infante reaction diffusion equation,the Burgers equation,the Burgers - mKdV equation and Klein - Gordon - Schrodinger equations.
