Pipe-racking is a very important operation in the drilling process. People began the research of mechanization of the pipe handling in order to overcome the faults in traditional pipe racking operation. Under such circumstances, pipe racking system, which is used for transferring pipes between the well and racking board area, was introduced into this field. Automatically completing this operation by remote control, this system could quicken the whole tripping process without the direct contact between operator and pipes, which would play an important role in enhancing security and reducing costs of drilling. As people gradually begin to exploit the deep and ultra-deep ocean area, more and more pipe racking systems have been deployed in semi-submersible drilling platform and have displayed great advantages.By deploying pipe racking system in drilling process, it could obviously enhance security, quicken speed and reduce labor intensity of drilling. Pipe racking system is widely used in semi-submersible platforms developed in recent years. In order to reduce the drilling costs and improve work condition in ocean drilling operation, this paper designed a semi-submersible platform using pipe racking system to automatize the operation of pipe racking. This paper mainly accomplished those following tasks:First, it analyzed the purpose and significance of this research and introduced the development situation and typical systems abroad. Secondly, it accomplished the general scheme design of pipe racking system and pick-up/lay-down system and introduced their operation process. Then, it analyzed the kinematics, statics and dynamics of the two systems and the screw theory was used in analyzing the kinematics and dynamics of the column group. Finally, the conclusion was obtained.
