The evaluate of Carboniferous source rocks has great significance to oil and gas exploration in Santanghu Basin. Understanding the present development status of source rocks in Santanghu Basin can guide the future oil and gas exploration there.Based on the theory of petroleum system and the theory of petroleum organic geochemistry , this paper adopts a variety of testing means to evaluate source rocks in Santanghu Basin and gets the latest achievements on development status of source rocks. Testing techniques used in this paper are mainly Rock Pyrolysis and gc-ms analysis; the main content is regional and special distribution of source rocks, abundance and types and maturity of organic matter, etc. After a comprehensive analysis of Santanghu Basin, the evaluation on the hydrocarbon potential there is made.By the field section study and indoor pyrolysis experiments as well as analyzing the characteristics of biomarker, it is found that the Carboniferous source rocks in the Santanghu Basin are distributed widely and presented by the trend of gradual reduction on thickness from the Southwest to the Northeast, that the abundance of organic matter in longitudinal newer layer is high up to 18.7% at most, that source rocks' thickness of jiangbasitao group in Daheishan profiles can reach 267 meters while the metamorphism of source rocks is serious. Organic matter is mainly mixed-source type; kerogen type isâ…¡type first, andâ…¢andâ… type second. All of them have good hydrocarbon potential which has a positive correlation with the distribution characteristics of source rocks' plane surface. The Maturity of organic matter has reached a stage of mature source rocks, a few belong to post mature.The sedimentary environment in Santanghu Basin should belong to marine of reducing environment or the kind of marine-terrigenous facies. By oil-source correlation it is found that Carboniferous source rocks around Santanghu and exploration well source rocks inside of the Basin have great similarities with crude oil. Crude oil has two main sources: one is harjiawu group in shallow layer; the other is Jiangbasitao group in older layer.
