By means of potential flow theory, the sloshing characteristics of the transverse cylindrical tank body with arbitrary proportional liquid are studied in this paper, based on the results of which, the effects of liquid sloshing on the hunting stability of the railway tank car are also discussed. The main works of this paper are shown as follows:It is assumed that the tank body is rigid and the fluid is two-dimensional ideal flow and irrotational flow. The governing equations of liquid sloshing within the transverse tank body are set up and the differential equations are discretized by the Galerkin method. Under the assumption of fluid potential function being variables-separated function, the portions dependent on spatial variables in the potential function are solved by the conditions of free sloshing liquid. Likewise, the kinetic equation of the free surface is used to find the portions dependent on time in the potential function in sloshing-forced liquid. The sloshing natural frequencies are calculated and compared with the experiment results, which shows that the results calculated in this paper perform a high accuracy. In addition, the change tendency of fluid sloshing frequencies with the liquid-filled proportions and radiuses is discussed.Based on the works ahead, the forces acting on the tank body are deduced from the relationship between the forces and the fluid potential function. By the same method, yaw moments acting on the tank body are approximately calculated. According to the characteristics of the forces and the moments, they are decomposed into the inertia part and the liquid sloshing part, which are calculated by using the self-compiled program based on MATLAB when the time-varying excitation of transverse and yaw accelerations are respectively acted on the tank body with different proportional liquid. Finally, the effects of liquid-filled proportions on fluid dynamic pressure are analyzed.The linear lateral dynamical model of the tank truck with 21 degrees of freedom is established based on the vehicle dynamics and the dynamics of solid-fluid interaction. Meanwhile, the influence of liquid sloshing on the critical velocity of hunting is investigated. The critical velocities of the tank truck with liquid sloshing are compared with ones of the tank truck without liquid sloshing.
