With the development of automated DNA sequencing techniques and the completion of a series of genome sequencing projects, a large number of DNA sequence data has been accumulated in the DNA databases. How to deal with the explosive growth of immense volume genomic DNA sequence date become a new challenge and an important task for bio-scientists. But it is difficult to obtain information from the DNA sequences directly. Therefore, many methods have been proposed to characterize and analyze DNA sequences. In recent years, the method of graphical representation of DNA sequence has drawn wide attention in theory and application. This thesis is mainly focus on graphical representation of DNA sequences and its application. The main contents of this thesis can be summerized as follow:In chapter one, based on the intruduction of the background about the graphical representation of DNA sequences, we intruduce the basic knowledge of bionformatics and the molecular biology. In chapter two, we give a review of all kinds of graphical representaion of DNA sequences. Also intruduce the similarity and dissimilarity analysis method based on the graphical representaion of DNA sequences. In chapter three, we introduce a novel 3D graphical representation of DNA sequences based on the 2D graphical representation of DNA sequences proposed by Randic et al. Based on the graphical representation, the the analysis of the similarities/dissimilarities among the coding sequences of the first exon ofβ-globin genes of 11 different species shows that this approach can provide satisfactory results. In the construction of the 3D graphical representation, we consider more information including not only sequences'structure but also the connection of bases in the transfer of data from a DNA sequence to its graphical representation, and hence the similarities/dissimilarities analysis of DNA sequences becomes more reasonable. It is possible that this study will shed new light on the development of DNA graphical representation.
