Database of current rural land use status is an important achievement of the second national survey of rural land, which can realize the normalization and standardization as well as integrated management of rural land use data. It also helps to the integration analysis and synthesis processing of spatial characteristics and property characteristics of land use data. The current form of county-level rural land use database is a kind of Personal Geodatabase, which uses the Microsoft Access database table storage attributes. The question is, the capacity of database is limited (no more than 2GB), which supports only single user editing, but not version management and multi-user editing of it. Therefore, it does not work when storing the slope maps which are larger than 2GB, which means that only the Slope rating of surface features and arable land can be filled to the attribute table. This research aims to solve the problem of storing large amount data in county land use database, based on theory research and practice. It established a rural land use status database finally, during which ArcGIS Desktop are selected as platform, ArcSDE as spatial data engine and SQL Server 2005 is used as tool for managing spatial database. the data of rural land survey was classified and organized, the logical model and relationship was established, the data of land survey was descripted by Geographical data structures and the Geodatabase data was stored in the feature class of the database. At the same time the key issues of the database was discussed.finally, the database was established. The research solved the problem of data storing that larger than 2GB on the one hand, on the other hand, it realized the backup and recovery of database through SQL Server 2005, which protected the security of rural land use status database. The database established using ArcSDE, SQL Server 2005 and ArcGIS Desktop is huge in storage capacity, good in safety performance and supporting remote data access at the same time, which provided foundations for sharing of Geographic information.
