From August 2008 to January 2009, we studied the habitat selection of red pandas by using Resource Selection Functions and Resource Selection Index in Gaoligongshan Natural Reserve. The results indicated that the key factor influenced on habitat selection in rainy season was the tree size; The secondary key factors were the tree density, stump density and density of bamboo; The secondary factor was the slope; The random factors were canopy, slope, slope position, vegetation type, bamboo height, distance to the nearest tree, log density, log size, log distance, tree stump size, tree stump distance, distance to water, hidden conditions. Red pandas preferred to select the coniferous forest and broad-leaved coniferous forest of the Eastern and the Northern Slope located in the middle or the higher parts of the hillside in our study area with Larger diameter trees (>30cm), lower density of tree (<6/20m2), higher density of bamboo (>70/m2 and 40-70/m2), a small number of stumps (<3/400m2).logit(P)=-2.223-15.946×tree size+6.828×tree density-4.933×bamboo density+4.615×stump density+2.432xslope. According to Resource Selection Functions, we can estimate the habitat selection probability:P=elogit(P)/(1+elogit(P)), this model correctly classified 95%.The key factor influenced on habitat selection in dry season was the tree size; The secondary key factors was the hidden conditions; The secondary factor were the stump density, density of bamboo; The random factors were canopy, slope, aspect, slope position, vegetation type, bamboo height, tree density, tree distance, log density, log size, log distance, tree stump size, tree stump distance, distance to water. Red pandas preferred to select the coniferous forest and broad-leaved coniferous forest of the Eastern and the Southern Slope located in the middle or the higher parts of the hillside in our study area with Larger diameter trees (15-30cm), well hidden conditions(visibility<10m), a small number of stumps(<3/400m2), higher density of bamboo (>70/m2 and 40-70/m2). logit (P)=-0.058-3.585×tree size-2.088×hidden conditions+1.569×stump density-1.084×bamboo density. According to Resource Selection Functions, we can estimate the habitat selection probability: P=elogit(P)/(1+elogit(P)), this model correctly classified 89.7%.
