The air-blast atomization processes of coal-water slurry (CWS) with two different rheological properties have been studied. Air-blast atomization consists of two processes which are primary breakup and secondary breakup. For the primary breakup, the jet core length and oscillating frequency of CWS in the near-field region were investigated. The results showed that the breakup process of CWS was performed in the non-axisymmetric Rayleigh-type breakup regime. The empirical formulation of dimensionless liquid jet core length was obtained. The relationships between the oscillating frequency f and ug and ul were investigated. For the secondary breakup, the slurry droplet breakup models of CWS which was exposed into the high-speed air stream were investigated experimentally. The study showed the difference between two kinds of CWS with the typical rheological properties. The characteristic time, deformation rate and velocity of slurry droplet were obtained. The correlation of drag coefficient in the deformation period was obtained, when the Weber number and characteristic time were in the ranges of 87~527 and 1.0~6.0.
