There are greater potential applications of 3-D orthogonal woven fabric (3DOWF) to the area of ballistic protection. The non-crimp features of warp and weft yarns impart the highest energy absorptions under ballistic impact to 3DOWF than other kinds of 3-D woven fabrics. The binder Z-yarns which across thickness direction can provides structure stability of the fabric. Such as integral structure imparts higher fracture toughness and inter-laminar shear strength than other fabric structures. It is necessary to characterize the ballistic damage properties of the 3DOWF, which will facilitate precise design of this structure when applied in impact situations. Here we carried out an investigation on the impact of the 3DOWF. An analytical model was developed to calculate the energy absorption of the 3DOWF under ballistic penetration by a hemispherical-cylindrical rigid projectile. The main work done in this paper are as follows:(1) 3DOWF was woven by Twaron(?) fiber tows. (2) ballistic impacting experiments were conducted and the residual velocities of the projectiles were obtained. The ballistic penetration performance indexes of 3DOWF were calculated from the experimental results and parameters of the fabric. (3) An analytical model of the 3DOWF under ballistic penetration was established, and the energy absorption by warp, weft yarns and Z-yarns. Then the penetration time and the deformation of 3DOWF from the impact loading strain rate can be obtained. (4) The influence of strain rate effect on the ballistic performance of the 3DOWF was investigated. Mechanical properties of fibers show rate-sensitive so that the strain rate effect is considered as a very important part in the analytical process. And it was found that fitting of the strain effect developed in this paper was innovative and effective. From the analytical model, the factors for improving ballistic performance of the 3DOWF were discussed. And this model, which takes only a few seconds to calculate after the program has been finished, is also very convenient for numerical calculation and could be useful for pre design purposes.
