Fire grate, as a key part of the waste incinerator, is one of the most important factors to restrict the waste incinerator's working efficiency. The fire grate material SN24T-1 which is manufactured by Shanghai Power Equipment Research Institute, is using in power plants. To meet the high-performance of fire grate, SY steel, a typical hard-machine material, is choosed. The low cutting parameters and serious tool wear are key factors constraining the high-efficiency, low-cost while milling the SY steel. Objected on high up machine efficiency, two carbide milling tools, YW2 and M2 both type 4XH16, are choosed for the test. By studying the milling mechanism of SY steel, optimized cutting parameters are obtained. And the tool failure mechanism and chip forming mechanism are analyzed.In this article,according to the mechanical and physical properties of SY steel in the actual machining process, YW2 and M2 carbide tool both type 4XH16 without coating are used. Orthogonal experimental method is applied in the test plan. Cutting depth, feed rate and cutting speed act as three factors each with four levers. And the metal removal and surface roughness are the experimental targets.Both tools'cutting parameters are optimized and commendatory cutting parameters having applyed in productive practice are given. Angle Orthogonal regressive experimental method is used to analyze the function relationship between cutting depth, feed rate, cutting speed and metal removal. Single factor experiment method is used to analyze the variation of cutting depth, feed rate and cutting speed effecting on metal removal, surface roughness and temperature near the cutting area while using YW2 milling tool, with prerequisite tool wear being a certain constant. By introducing workpiece surface roughness and temperature around the cutting area, tool wear and breakage mechanism are systematically analyzed in the milling experiments. And the main failure reasons while cutting parameters are different and tool wear process with optimized cutting parameters are analyzed when using YW2 and M2 milling cutters. The typical chip forms with variant cutting parameters are studied too.
