Epoxy resins possess excellent mechanical properties such as electricalinsulation, resistance and bonding performance, which are widely used in coatings, composites, electronics, adhesives and other fields.3,3',5,5'-tetramethyl-4,4'-di(2-hydroxyethanyoxy)-biphenyl as a new modifiedmonomer of epoxy resin was synthesized from 3,3',5,5'-tetramethyl-diphenol in thisarticle. The effects of the molar ratio of reactants, the amount of base, catalyst, and thereaction temperature on the yield of the product were investigated. The result showedthat the rate of conversion and purity of the product were 95.9% and 99.1 %respectively under optimum conditions as follows: n(TMBP)∶n(NaOH)∶n(2-chloroethyl alcohol)=1∶3.0∶2.5; reaction time 10h, temperature 110℃. Thechemical structure of product was characterized by IR, MS and NMR. On the otherhand, thermosetting liquid crystal acrylic resins have the merits of liquid crystalorientation and orderly, low phase transition temperature, better solubility and hasbetter forming processing than the imides, cyanate esters, acetylene-based liquidcrystal resin. A new modified liquid crystal monomer 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbiphenyl-4,4'-diacrylate was synthesized from 3,3',5,5'-tetramethyl-diphenol andacryloyl chloride. The effects of the molar ratio of reactants, catalysts, reactiontemperatures and times on the yield of the product were investigated. The optimumconditions as follows: n(TMBP)∶n(acryloyl chloride)∶n(triethylamine)=1∶3.0∶3.0;reaction time 1h under temperature 0℃and reaction time 8h under room temperature, the yield was 77.1%. The chemical structure of product was characterized by IR andNMR. In addition, acryloyl chloride is an important material for the synthesis ofspecialty acrylate and acrylamide compounds. We developed a new method forsynthesis of acryloyl chloride.
