This paper is divided into two parts.The first part is about the novel free radical polymerization initiation system of diperiodatonickelate(IV) periodate complex(DPN) and its applied aspects.In the research work of free radical polymerization, the development of new and efficient initiator is in the highlight. Many studies have been reported that the mechanism of the procedure, Ni(1V)棐~Ni( II), was an one-step two-electron transfer process without free radical intermediate, and could not initiate polymerization of vinyl monomers. However, our research work indicated that the redox system of Ni(IV) and different molecules could initiate the homopolymerization of vinyl monomer, such as acrylonitrile and acrylamide. The paper research into the effects of varied factors on the polymerization rate and the macromolecular weight, the reaction rule is according to the general radical polymerization initiated by redox system. So the mechanism of two-step one-electron transfer process was supposed, in which the free radical as the intermediate could initiate the polymerization of vinyl monomers. For some characteristic groups in the macromolecules, whose reducing power is very weak, the suitable oxidator is difficult to select in order to make graft copolymerization. Our studies indicate that the redox system, which composed of Ni(JA[) and the weak reducing power group in the macromolecules, could generate grafting point directly in the macromolecule and initiate high grafting efficiency copolymerization. The effects of many factors on the grafting parameters were investigated and the grafting copolymer was measured. In the application field, the grafting copolymer was used to strengthen the compatibility and blend of nylon and PMMA, the result of the study show the effectiveness.In addition, some research work was carried out Ofl the other super valence transIIabstractmetal being applied to the grafting copolymerization of natural macromolecules. The second part is focused on the Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization (A~RP)which is a novel polymerization method promoted in the recent years. One direction of its research work is the development of efficient catalytic system. Our studies suggest that tbe ATRP of styrene, catalyzed by Fe( II )/phen and initiated by benzylchloride, has the characteristic of living/controlled polymerization.
