An idea of preparation of chromium-enriched brewer's yeast by using chromium-containing leather waste was put forward on two background facts: 1) chromium(III), as a necessary trace element and cofactor for insulin, has important physiological functions in metabolism, meanwhile chromium-enriched brewer's yeast is one of the most common forms of chromium supplementation; and 2) there is a large amount of chromium-containing leather waste in leather industry.Chromium-containing leather waste was firstly treated in water to soak out part of salt in it. Then a two-step method was applied in the degradation of chromium-containing leather waste, in which water vapor of O.lOMPa (121癈) and hydrochloric acid were used, respectively.Media of brewer's yeast was made up of glucose, peptone, and degradation liquids of chromium-containing leather waste which contained abundant chromium(III) and hydrolysate of collagen. Through orthogonal experiments, the best formula of media could be determined as: glucose 5g/L, peptone 2g/L, and degradation liquids 79ml/L.Experiments showed that preparation of chromium-enriched brewer's yeast by using chromium-containing leather waste could reduce the production cost and the product had high chromium content.
