In the research of worm gearing,people have developed some methods from improvement of tooth profile to increase the carrying capacity and efficiency in some extent . However,there are few studies that enhance the carrying capacity and torque efficiency through chemical heat treat to improve the condition of the surface .Through orthogonal optimum seeking,an optimum ion sulphur-nitriding process for 42CrMo steel was gained,and the influence parameters were studied . By examination of metallogragh,microhardness,X-ray diffraction and SEM +EDS,the surface layer's microstructures,phase structures and hardness curves were determined. Besides,the mechanism and process of formation of the ion sulphurized-nitrided layer was analysed .The tests of wear resistance and anti-seizing by AMSLER machine were also conducted. Finally,the treated worm on the experiment sets was examined (in efficiency ),and the result shows that the worm treated with ion sulphur-nitriding is better than that not treated .
