An atrium within a building is a is a opening or series of openings in floor assemblies, This design feature has gained considerable popularity, mainly because of its visual appeal. The structure property has challenged smoke control technology adopted in traditional buildings. However, the current study of such subject in our country is still at the elementary stage. What have been included in our active norm is the method based on volume change times, which has fallen into disuse in developed country and have been proved to be so simple and inaccurate as to lead to great mistakes sometimes. Thus, it is necessary to carry out theoretical and experimental research on fire in atria. The focus of this article is to apply scale model to investigate the effect of various parameters on smoke movement and to develop guidelines for their design.Firstly, the author introduced categorizing of atria buildings, as well as researching and applying of smoke management in atrium buildings, still contents and methods of researching. After that, the author introduced the development of plum, characters of smoke, calculations in the process of smoke production, schemes of smoke management, etc. Then this paper presents a list of factors for architects and mechanical engineers to consider early in the design of a smoke management system. Finally, based on simulative theories, this paper presents results obtained from a series of tests conducted using a scale model. The results from the scale model studies are used to investigate the effect of various parameters including the size of exhaust inlet, location of exhaust inlet, time of smoke exhaust fan beginning and heat-release for smoke filling. Furthermore, these results reflect the impact of plugholing on the effectiveness of a smoke management and characteristic of smoke movement.Based on this research, the analysis led to method of how to choose the size of exhaust inlets and location of exhaust inlets. At the same time this article present law of smoke movement in different time of smoke exhaust fan beginning and heat-release. All the analysis results were useful for fire-protection and smoke management in practice and can be referenced by research of correlative fields.
