Polymer/clay nanocomposites is a new class of material. They can attain excellent mechanical properties, thermal stability and barrier properties at lower clay content. Their potential applications include film, food packing, and components in electrical parts, automobile and airplane.Preparing the ACR/MMT nanocomposites by emulsion polymerization, the structures of the intercalated nanocomposites are characterized by XRD and TGA,TEM. By the comparision to the microstructures of different nanocomposite, which were made by different methods, we testified the montmorillonite can be used to preparing nanocomposite by emulsion polymerization, and the addition of montmorillonite effect the polymer process obviously. And we also give the intercalation mechanism of emulsion polymerization, the reaction calories will be benefit to the exploit of montmorillonite. The properties of ACR/MMT/PVC composites were characterized. The addition of montmorillonite can improve the strain strength; enhance the decomposition temperature and vicat soft point, little influence to impact strength. At the same clay content, the properties of ACR/MMT/PVC composites were superior to those of PVC and ACR, MMT mixture prepared by means of melt mixing. It is because the montmorillonite was dispersed homogeneously in the composites with nano-dimension.The apparent kinetics of the polymerization process was firstly studied by conventional gravimetric methods in this thesis. The addition of MMT resulted in that the reaction times extended and the reaction rate decreased. The causation is that the montmorillonite consume the radical, and it also hold up the movement of monomer in water. The thermal decomposition kinetics of nanocomposites is studied by Freeman-Carroll method. The reaction order and apparent activation energy of nanocomposites by emulsion methods are obviously increased. This also shows that the thermal stability of nanocomposites is much better than pure PBA.
