With the development of science and technology, infrared optical fiber materials are becoming a more and more hotspot for developed countries to research and develop. Having isotropy, homogeneousness and high transmittance in visible and infrared region, chalcohalide glasses become ideal infrared optical fiber materials. This thesis researched the microstructures and some properties such as glass-forming regions, thermal properties and infrared transmittance etc of two chalcohalide glasses As2Ss-Cdl2 and GeS2-GaS3-KI. Furthermore we experimented fiber-drawing of GeS2-GaS3-KI chalcohalide glasses.The glass-forming regions of (1-x) As2S3-xCdI2 binary system glass are fairly small . The maximum x value in glass-forming region of this glass qunched in air was more than 4 mol % ,whereas more than 5 mol % when water quenching. With the increase of x value, the glass transition temperatures (Tg) of the seris of (1-x) As2S3-xCdl2 glass were 201~205癈, decreasing a little. Their colors ranged from red to tint red ,which explained the shore-wave absorption edge shifted towards shorter wavelength combined with the visible transmission spectra. The IR transmission spectra shew the IR cut-off wavelength did not change a lot with the addition of Cdl2. Based on the experimental data, the microstructure is considered to be that the discrete molecule species of Asia and Cd-S atomic bonds or clusters are homogeneously dispersed in a disordered polymer network formed by AsSa pyramids interconnected by sulfur bridges.The glass-forming regions of GeS2-Ga2S3-KI ternary system glasses are fairly big. Homogeneous glass could still be prepared with 57 mol% KI content. With the addition of KI, glass colors ranged from red to tint red , which explained the shore-wave absorption edge shifted towards shorter wavelength combined with the visible transmission spectra. TheIR transmission spectra show the IR cut-off wavelengths remain constant basically. DTA curves show that Tg is in the region 236- 365 C , Tc is in the region 414-664 癈 and Tc -Tg is more than 100 C, Thus this system glass has good glass-forming ability.Comprehensive studies indicated that two new system chalcohalide glasses have high IR cut-off wavelength and are able to act as strong candidates for IR optical fiber matetials.
