It's very importent to control quality of pipeline girth welds in building and using large diameter gas pipeline. As an main method of NDT(Non-destructive Testing), UT (Ultrasonic Testing) has developed the important function in inspecting pipelines girth welds, and were adopted by industrial countries of the world. The traditional UT system has some disadvantages, such as low inspective efficiency, difficult to evaluate defects and so on. Designing and manufacturing an automatic UT system for pipeline girth welds has great importance signification.According to the idea of module integration and on the basis of PC, the automatic UT system has been developed by electronics technology, computer science, numerical control, NDT and NDE (Non-destructive Evaluation) technology and micromoter drive technology and so on. The system suits testing pipeline girth welds on field, and has high cost performance radio, inspective reliability and scanning efficiency.A crawler, device of girth welds testing outside pipeline is developed successfully. The main parts of crawler, step and welds scanning parts, have function of fast load and unload and quick adjustment. Under the control of computer system, crawler takes the ultrasonic probe to inspect pipeline girth welds automatically and quickly. When testing different diameter pipeline or vessel, the orbit module is changed only.A multi-axis stepper controlling card based on ISA bus and a stepper driver have been developed successfully. The controlling module of numerical control system formed by stepper controlling card and computer, automatic controlling of stepper is realized. The stepper driver guarantees the stepper running high-efficiency and lower power loss. The control system realizes 5-axis controlling and interpolation operation, and has the extensive applied realm.The system not only adapts to automatic testing pipeline girth welds, but also uses toinspect complicated curved face and other parts automatically by changed orbit.
