It is well known that the extensive application of PS had been restricted for its brittleness. Since a new method for continuous producing high impact PS was developed by Dow company in 1952,PS have been used more and more widely in the package, family electricity and toy and so on. PS is the 3rd commonly used plastic materials for its largely amount. Most of studies on the toughen of PS were been developed by the addition of rubber-type components. Recently, it is reported the PS is toughened and enhanced with the addition of nano oxide particles of which the organic on the surface.Due to abound resource of rare earth in china, there have been increasing studies on the polymer modification with rare earth. On the basis of summarizing our prodecessor'works, Polystyrene doped with rare earth alkoxides were prepared by bulk polymerization. After mixing of styrene and rare earth alkoxides, the polymerization took place. The present work seeks to study the bulk polymerization of the styrene doped rare earth alkoxides monomers and to reveal the toughening mechanism of doped PS and its factor of different chain length of alkoxyl groups on and different rare earth on. The magnetic properties have been studied.The impact strength data of Polystyrene doped with holmium alkoxides indicated that holmium alkoxides have obvious toughening effect on PS and were influenced by the Ho content and the structure of the alkoxide groups. The toughening effect is relevant to the coordination of Ho ion and electron of benzene ring, introducing of flexible alkoxyl chain and supper tiny particles and so on, Ho(i-C4)/ PS have the best toughening effect.The impact strength of Re/PS indicated that rare earth have obvious toughing effect on PS .The impact strength of Re/PS increased with increasing atomic number.Testing result of magnetic canacirv indicate that magnetic thatmagnetic action gets stronger by introduing holmium. The magnetics action in Ho/PS is stronger than Ho(opri)3. It may be the result by exchanging Ho ion and Ho ion via coordinated conjugated electron.In this paper, It is reported that after the rapid formation of a gel by mixing of styrene and praseodymium triisooctanyl oxide, the PS hybrid materials were obtained by the in-situ polymerization. This preparation overcome the association of rare earth in the materials and result in formation of the praseodymium triisooctanyl oxide/PS with high praseodymium content and high transparence, their fluorescence and heat capability were improved obviously.It is testified that there were crosslinking network by means of IR, SEM and DMTA.Up to now this work have never been reported at home and abroad.
