The chemistry of free radicals is one of the advanced subjects of fundamental sciences such as biomedicine, environment protection, new energy sources and new material. Owing to the diversity, short life-span, low concentration, active property, and quick rate of reaction of free radical, it is rather difficult to produce and detect. The normal methods such as photo-electrochemical effect, pulse radiolysis and chemical method are complex, the reaction procedures are miscellaneous, and the detection of radicals produced is more difficult. Though ESR or EPR has many distinct advantages in detection of free radical, the equipments used are costly and the condition is rigorous. HPLC, spectrophotometry and other methods such as HPLC-ESR and FT-ESR are sensitive and accuracy, but the complex procedures, the harsh conditions and costly equipments have not been solved. In this paper, taking the advantages of reaction between acetate, DMSO, tert-butyl alcohol or propanoic acid and free radical, sulfate anion radical, wiich is produced in the reduction of persulfate, we realized the production of methyl radical and ethyl radical. The detection of the lower fatty radicals in situ and the determination of electroinactive substances acetic acid, DMSO and propanoic acid based on the reduction waves of the corresponding radicals on mercury electrode were realized by polarography, respectively.Chen Zhao-peng (Analytical Chemistry) Directed by Song Jun-feng...
