Some fundamental research work has been conducted on the natural gas catalytic water heater for household utilization and its combustion catalysts. We prepared the Oxygen Storage Materials (OSM), which is a key component of the support, with different preparation methods, as well as investigated the effects of different M addition on the Oxygen Storage Capacity (OSC) of the OSM. The XRD, TPR and BET techniques were used to characterize the performance of OSM. Also, our experiments have studied the combustion catalysts for the catalytic domestic boiler, have chosen the suitable catalysts and changed the structure and combustion method to reach flameless combustion.The results show that different preparation methods have large effect on the OSC of OSM. Samples prepared by sol-gel method have the largest OSC and suitable specific surface area. The OSC of OSM increased with the increase of M content , due to the oxygen storage ability of M-O. However, after aged at high temperature, their OSC decreased dramatically because of the phase separation and the formation of M2O3 and MO2.YSZ-A12O3+OSM is a kind of good support for methane combustion catalysts. The Fe2O3,Co3O4,MnO2/ YS2-Al2O3+OSM catalyst has the best catalytic activity and thermal stability.We optimized the other two important components of the catalytic water heater,the venturi pipe and nozzle. The performance of the water heater was measured with agreeable catalyst. The result showed that the advantages offered by the catalytic combustor is that catalytic combustion can be carried out over a wide air: fuel ratio and at low temperature with high heat efficiency. Moreover, NOx emission is much lower than conventional combustor, making use of natural gas as energy source environmentally and efficiently.
