In this paper, high density polyethylene/bentonite nanocomposites were prepared by simple melt compounding, their structures were demonstrated with X-ray diffraction ,FT-IR spectra and DTA.It was proved that the molecular chain of PE could be intercalated in layered silicate of organobentonite,the intercalation nanocomposites were obtained. Meanwhile, the factors that affect the intercalation behavior of polymer were investigated. The result showed that (1) organic modifier can reduce the polarity of Na-bentonite, and compatilizer (maleic anhydride grafted polyethylene) can strengthen the polarity of polyethylene and the interface compatibility between polyethylene and bentonite. When the number of methylene groups in alkylamine was larger than 16,the intercalation nanocomposites were obtained. (2)When the content of organobentonite was 3wt%, the intercalation behaviors depended on the chain length of organic modifier in the bentonite and the content of compatilizer. (3)When the content of compatilizer were 15wt%~30wt%(to high density polyethylene), the intercalation high density polyethylene /bentonite nanocomposites were obtained.(4)The intercalation nanocomposites were obtained after bentonite compounded with low density polyethylene and liner low density polyethylene respectively. The mechanical property of the prepared composite was increased, the organic solvent barrier property was improved obviously.
