Spent Potlining (SPL) is the byproduct waste of electrolytic aluminum industry. Its annual production was about 0.85 million tons in 1980s in the world and is about 0.12 million tons in China now. Incineration is an effective way to dispose of SPL with the advantages of energy recycling, weight and volume reduction.Combustion characteristics of SPL were tested and compared with those of Beijing Wangpingcun anthracite and Datong bituminous.Toxicity analysis of SPL was made.Combustion experiments on SPL were made on a muffle furnace. Influence of furnace temperatures on mass loss was investigated. The coherence temperature was found and total florin in the ash was analyzed.The combustion characteristics of SPL were also tested with a TGA and compared with those of Beijing Wangpingcun anthracite and Datong bituminous. The apparent activation energy of combustion was calculated. The co-combustion of SPL and Datong bituminous was conducted and the parameters, such as Tf, Tp, combustion intensity and the uniformity of combustion with time were also studied.Pyrolysis of SPL (base potlining) was performed on a TGA. Low Heating Value (LHV) of the volatile, the apparent activation energy and the frequent factor were calculated.Combustion tests on SPL (base potlining) were also made on a bench-scale fluidized bed.Through these studies the combustion characteristics of SPL were investigated and the results are useful for SPL disposal through combustion and for further study.
